Toxin-producing bacteria found in CJ Strike Reservoir

July 2024 · 1 minute read

A toxin-producing bacteria has been found in large amounts at CJ Strike Reservoir by Idaho's Department of Environmental Quality on Tuesday.

The cyanobacteria normally found in the water can bloom and create toxic chemical compounds when the temperature rises. The water in CJ Strike Reservoir can be harmful to people, pets and livestock. Those with liver or kidney damage are said to be at increased risk of illness.

Southwest District Health urges residents recreating near or in CJ Strike Reservoir to avoid swimming, wading, and other activities in the water. Further precautions say to not drink or cook water containing bloom and to wash skin or pet fur with clear water as soon as possible after being in the reservoir.

The public will be advised when the concern no longer exists. For more information, go to the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality's website.
