BOCA RATON, Fla. (CBS12) — A former attorney is under arrest after a body was found at his father’s law office building in Boca Raton, Florida.
Brandon Labiner, 34, appeared in court Monday and faces a first-degree murder charge. The judge ordered him to be held with no bond and have no contact with the victim's family.
This comes after authorities found a man unresponsive in a large pool of blood with several gunshot wounds in a parking garage. Records show the suspect's father, Paul Labiner, owns the law office building where the body was found.
Police arrested Brandon after an investigation led them to another law office building -- this one owned by Brandon -- located at 900 N Federal Highway, where the former local attorney had reportedly barricaded himself inside.
The 34-year-old is a former personal injury attorney in Boca Raton. He used to work with his father until resigning last year after his father filed a lawsuit against him.
Brandon's license was suspended by the Florida BAR in April after his father filed a complaint against his son, accusing him of stealing $450,000 from his mother's trust.
According to the Boca Raton Police Department, officers arrived at 5499 N Federal Highway in Boca Raton just before 4:30 p.m. on Saturday after calls of a shooting. That location is Paul's law office, records show.
Police said they also found five used 9mm shell casings and four unused casings. Video surveillance inside the garage showed a man arrive on a bicycle, take out a box, remove a gun from the box and pace around the garage for nearly an hour.
Around 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, the man was seen picking an item up off the ground and then hiding near the wall on the north side of the garage.
A second man is then seen entering the frame just before a fight breaks out between the two men, according to the report. The man who hid by the wall then reenters the footage, holds out his arm towards the area where the body was found then runs out of camera view.
After making contact with Brandon, and later his attorney, police managed to get him out of the building he owned, and into police custody.
A search of the restroom on the second floor of the building led to officers finding a gun cleaning kit and a piece of paper with the name of Brandon's attorney, according to the arrest report.
Authorities said a search of the office revealed a bicycle, two cell phones, a Dell laptop and DNA evidence related to the case alongside other items. Later, a search of a vehicle revealed a 9mm firearm and multiple boxes of ammunition along with more DNA evidence and other items related to the shooting.
Boca Raton police said the relationship between the suspect and the deceased is under investigation. Brandon is being charged with first-degree premeditated murder with a firearm.
Monday in court, the judge ordered Brandon to be held with no bond. His lawyer did not wish to give a comment on the case when WPEC asked him in court.
